Is This Thing On?

This is certainly way more out of my comfort zone than I would like to admit. I have never made a blog before in my life and putting myself out there on the internet for anyone to see is nerve wracking. Godspeed to all who have posted YouTube videos and made public Instagram profiles but that is not me. Nevertheless, here we go.

When I was considering what platform to use, I really didn't want to overthink it. Since I have no prior blogging experience (or coding experience for that matter), I didn't want to choose something too complex that would end up stressing me out more than it provided me opportunities. Add to that the ability to use my google account instead of making a whole new login, the choice to use Blogger seemed like a no-brainer.

I haven't spent much time thus far developing a learning network, so it is nice to think this might be a space where I can do so. I think it is valuable to share ideas and learn new things. I hope someone can read this blog and learn something or leave me pieces of advice. Also, honestly, just the act of writing a blog makes me more likely to check out other things librarians are sharing online. It gets the ball rolling, so to speak.

One of many reasons I am interested in working in public libraries is I wholeheartedly love getting to connect with the community and create a positive culture of community. As a result, I do truly want to make sure I am doing the best job I can to provide for my patrons. And that, by nature, means continuously learning and engaging with my fellow librarians. Doing so by blog hadn't occurred to me before, but hey, why not? If by learning from others I can be a better version of myself, become better at my job, and provide better services to my community, then why shouldn't I?

And who knows, maybe I'll even end up enjoying blogging. Until next time folks!

  1. Hi Maya! I too am completely amazed by people who post publicly online, the influencer life is definitely not for me! Fortunately, blogging does have the ability to be a bit more anonymous, if you want it to be of course. I'm also rather new to blogging and was a little overwhelmed by the platform options, I completely understand your choice of a platform where you could use a google login. I feel like I have approximately 654 logins for websites at this point, it's overwhelming! I can definitely see how blogging can help grow our PLN's and I'm excited to explore other library professionals writings. Have you found any you particularly enjoy yet?

  2. Hi Maya
I chose Blogger as a platform for the exact same reason. Even though I do have coding experience and a public instagram profile I share a lot of the same sentiments you expressed. I saw a few people’s blogs were more of a sort of “how to” or comparing and contrasting the options we were given. Which made me terrified I did the assignment completely wrong but your post gave me hope. I had no idea how common blogging was amongst librarians until I took Core Values with Zachariah Claybaugh. I ended up engaging with a lot of different and interesting blogs in that course. I hope I can be real and remember to come back and link some. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is critcat which is good if you have an interaction in cataloging, categorizing information, etc.
